Lesson 9 – Basic Sorting & Filtering
Sorting and filtering help you organize and view data clearly. These are essential tools for any real-world Excel task.

1. Sorting
Ascending
A → Z for text
Smallest → Largest for numbers
Descending
Z → A for text
Largest → Smallest for numbers
Go to Home → Sort & Filter OR use Data tab.
2. Filtering
Click anywhere in your data → Home → Sort & Filter → Filter.
Filter types
- Text filters: contains, begins with…
- Number filters: greater than, between…
- Date filters: this month, last year…
Clearing filters
Data → Clear
Always select your entire table before sorting.
Sorting partial data can jumble your records.
Practice Task
- Create a table of 20 names with ages
- Sort by age (small→large)
- Filter only ages greater than 25
Homework
- Take a sample stock list and filter items with quantity below 10
